Il était une fois, dans un royaume lointain, une reine qui cousait près d'une fenêtre au cadre d'ébène, en plein hiver. La neige tombait en flocons. 

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, a queen was sewing by a window with an ebony frame, in the middle of winter. The snow was falling in flakes.

Elle se piqua le doigt, et trois gouttes de sang tombèrent sur la neige. "Ah," pensa la reine, "si seulement j'avais un enfant à la peau blanche comme la neige, aux lèvres rouges comme le sang et aux cheveux noirs comme l'ébène."

She pricked her finger, and three drops of blood fell onto the snow. "Ah," the queen thought, "if only I had a child with skin as white as snow, lips as red as blood, and hair as black as ebony."

Peu de temps après, elle eut une petite fille, blanche comme la neige, rouge comme le sang, et aux cheveux noirs comme l'ébène, qu'on appela Blanche-Neige. Mais la reine mourut en lui donnant la vie.

Soon after, she had a little daughter, white as snow, red as blood, and with hair as black as ebony, who was named Snow White. But the queen died while giving her life.

Le roi se remaria avec une femme très belle, mais fière et méchante. Elle possédait un miroir magique. 

The king remarried a very beautiful woman, but she was proud and wicked. She owned a magic mirror.

Chaque jour, elle lui demandait : "Miroir, mon beau miroir, dis-moi qui est la plus belle en ce royaume ?" Et le miroir répondait : "Majesté, vous êtes la plus belle."

Every day, she would ask it: "Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?" And the mirror would answer: "My Queen, you are the fairest of all."

Mais Blanche-Neige grandissait et embellissait. Un jour, le miroir répondit : "Majesté, vous êtes très belle, mais Blanche-Neige est mille fois plus belle que vous."

But Snow White grew up and became more beautiful. One day, the mirror answered: "My Queen, you are very fair, but Snow White is a thousand times fairer than you."

Folle de jalousie, la reine ordonna à un chasseur d'emmener Blanche-Neige dans la forêt pour la tuer. 

Mad with jealousy, the queen ordered a huntsman to take Snow White into the forest to kill her.

Mais le chasseur eut pitié. "Fuyez, pauvre enfant !" dit-il. Il la laissa s'enfuir et rapporta à la reine le cœur d'un jeune sanglier. 

But the huntsman took pity. "Run away, poor child!" he said. He let her escape and brought the heart of a young boar to the queen.

Blanche-Neige courut à travers les bois sombres, terrifiée. Les branches des arbres semblaient être des bras griffus cherchant à l'attraper. 

Snow White ran through the dark woods, terrified. The tree branches looked like clawed arms trying to grab her.

Épuisée, elle arriva devant une minuscule chaumière. Elle frappa, mais personne ne répondit. La porte était ouverte, alors elle entra. 

Exhausted, she came upon a tiny cottage. She knocked, but no one answered. The door was open, so she went inside.

À l'intérieur, tout était petit et bien rangé. Il y avait une table avec sept petites assiettes et, plus loin, sept petits lits. 

Inside, everything was small and tidy. There was a table with seven little plates, and further on, seven little beds.

Morte de faim, elle mangea un peu de chaque assiette. Puis, trop fatiguée pour continuer, elle s'allongea sur les lits et s'endormit. 

Starving, she ate a little from each plate. Then, too tired to go on, she lay down on the beds and fell asleep.

Le soir, les Sept Nains rentrèrent de leur travail à la mine. "Qui s'est assis sur ma chaise ?" dit le premier. "Qui a mangé dans mon assiette ?" dit le second. 

In the evening, the Seven Dwarfs returned from their work in the mine. "Who has been sitting in my chair?" said the first. "Who has been eating from my plate?" said the second.

Puis ils virent Blanche-Neige. "Oh, comme elle est belle !" s'exclamèrent-ils. Ils la laissèrent dormir. 

Then they saw Snow White. "Oh, how beautiful she is!" they exclaimed. They let her sleep.

Le lendemain, Blanche-Neige leur raconta son histoire. Les nains lui proposèrent de rester si elle s'occupait de la maison. Elle accepta avec joie. 

The next day, Snow White told them her story. The dwarfs offered to let her stay if she took care of the house. She accepted with joy.

Au château, la reine découvrit que Blanche-Neige était toujours en vie. Furieuse, elle se déguisa en vieille marchande et prépara une pomme empoisonnée.

At the castle, the queen discovered that Snow White was still alive. Furious, she disguised herself as an old peddler woman and prepared a poisoned apple.

Elle offrit la pomme à Blanche-Neige. "Goûte-la, ma jolie," dit-elle. La pomme était si belle que Blanche-Neige ne put résister. 

She offered the apple to Snow White. "Taste it, my pretty," she said. The apple was so beautiful that Snow White could not resist.

Elle croqua dans la pomme et tomba aussitôt, comme morte. Les nains, en rentrant, la trouvèrent et pleurèrent leur amie. 

She bit into the apple and immediately fell down, as if dead. The dwarfs, upon returning, found her and mourned their friend.

Ils la placèrent dans un cercueil de verre. Un jour, un prince passa par là et tomba amoureux de sa beauté. 

They placed her in a glass coffin. One day, a prince passed by and fell in love with her beauty.

Il supplia les nains de lui confier le cercueil. En le transportant, un porteur trébucha. Le choc fit sortir le morceau de pomme de la gorge de Blanche-Neige, qui se réveilla. Le prince lui demanda sa main, et ils vécurent heureux pour toujours. 

He begged the dwarfs to entrust him with the coffin. As they carried it, a bearer stumbled. The jolt dislodged the piece of apple from Snow White's throat, and she awoke. The prince asked for her hand, and they lived happily ever after.
