Dans un petit village italien, vivait un sculpteur sur bois solitaire nommé Geppetto. Un jour, il décida de sculpter une marionnette dans un morceau de bois enchanté. « Je t'appellerai Pinocchio », dit-il. 

In a small Italian village, lived a lonely woodcarver named Geppetto. One day, he decided to carve a puppet from an enchanted piece of wood. "I will call you Pinocchio," he said.

Alors qu'il travaillait, Geppetto fut stupéfait de voir la marionnette s'animer ! Pinocchio se mit à rire et à danser dans l'atelier. Le cœur de Geppetto s'emplit de joie. Il avait enfin un fils. 

As he worked, Geppetto was astonished to see the puppet come to life! Pinocchio laughed and danced around the workshop. Geppetto's heart filled with joy. He finally had a son.

Geppetto voulait que Pinocchio aille à l'école comme les autres garçons. N'ayant pas d'argent, il vendit son seul manteau pour acheter un abécédaire à Pinocchio. 

Geppetto wanted Pinocchio to go to school like other boys. Having no money, he sold his only coat to buy Pinocchio a spelling book.

En chemin vers l'école, Pinocchio entendit la musique d'un spectacle de marionnettes. Oubliant sa promesse à Geppetto, il vendit son livre pour acheter un billet. 

On his way to school, Pinocchio heard the music of a puppet show. Forgetting his promise to Geppetto, he sold his book to buy a ticket.

Le maître marionnettiste, un homme bourru nommé Mangefeu, fut d'abord furieux de l'interruption de Pinocchio. Mais en entendant son histoire, il fut pris de pitié. 

The puppet master, a gruff man named Mangiafuoco, was at first furious at Pinocchio's interruption. But upon hearing his story, he felt pity.

Au lieu de le punir, Mangefeu donna à Pinocchio cinq pièces d'or. « Apporte ça à ton père, Geppetto », gronda-t-il. « Et maintenant, va-t'en ! » 

Instead of punishing him, Mangiafuoco gave Pinocchio five gold coins. "Take this to your father, Geppetto," he growled. "Now be off!"

Sur le chemin du retour, Pinocchio rencontra un Renard boiteux et un Chat aveugle. Ces deux filous virent les pièces d'or et élaborèrent un plan rusé. 

On his way home, Pinocchio met a lame Fox and a blind Cat. These two tricksters saw the gold coins and devised a cunning plan.

« Pourquoi ne pas planter tes pièces dans le Champ des Miracles ? » suggéra le Chat. « Du jour au lendemain, elles pousseront pour devenir un arbre à argent ! » 

"Why don't you plant your coins in the Field of Miracles?" suggested the Cat. "Overnight, they will grow into a money tree!"

Pinocchio, crédule, les suivit jusqu'à un champ isolé. Il enterra ses pièces et attendit que l'arbre pousse. Le Renard et le Chat se cachèrent à proximité, ricanant. 

The gullible Pinocchio followed them to a lonely field. He buried his coins and waited for the tree to grow. The Fox and the Cat hid nearby, snickering.

Cette nuit-là, les deux compères, déguisés en bandits, attaquèrent Pinocchio. Ils prirent ses pièces d'or et le laissèrent pendu à un arbre. 

That night, the pair, disguised as bandits, attacked Pinocchio. They took his gold coins and left him hanging from a tree.

Heureusement, la Fée aux Cheveux Turquoise passait par là. Elle vit la pauvre marionnette et le fit descendre. Elle l'emmena dans sa maison pour le soigner. 

Luckily, the Fairy with Turquoise Hair was passing by. She saw the poor puppet and took him down. She brought him to her cottage to care for him.

Quand Pinocchio se réveilla, la Fée lui demanda ce qui s'était passé. Honteux, Pinocchio mentit. Aussitôt, son nez se mit à grandir, grandir, grandir ! 

When Pinocchio awoke, the Fairy asked him what had happened. Ashamed, Pinocchio lied. Immediately, his nose began to grow longer and longer and longer!

« Vois-tu, Pinocchio », dit gentiment la Fée, « les mensonges ont le nez long. » Elle appela des piverts qui ramenèrent son nez à sa taille normale. Pinocchio promit de toujours dire la vérité.

"You see, Pinocchio," the Fairy said kindly, "lies have long noses." She summoned woodpeckers who pecked his nose back to its proper size. Pinocchio promised to always tell the truth.

En route pour retrouver Geppetto, Pinocchio rencontra un garçon nommé Crapule. « Viens avec moi au Pays des Joujoux ! » dit Crapule. « C'est un endroit où on ne travaille jamais et où on joue toute la journée ! » 

On his way to find Geppetto, Pinocchio met a boy named Lampwick. "Come with me to the Land of Toys!" said Lampwick. "It's a place where you never work and play all day!"

Pinocchio oublia encore une fois ses promesses et partit avec Crapule. Le Pays des Joujoux était tout ce qu'il avait promis, rempli de bonbons et de jeux. 

Pinocchio once again forgot his promises and went with Lampwick. The Land of Toys was everything he had promised, filled with sweets and games.

Mais il y avait un piège. Un matin, Pinocchio se réveilla avec une paire de longues oreilles poilues. Il se transformait en âne ! 

But there was a catch. One morning, Pinocchio woke up with a pair of long, furry ears. He was turning into a donkey!

Entièrement transformé en âne, Pinocchio fut vendu à un cirque. Il fut forcé d'exécuter des tours jusqu'à ce qu'il se blesse à la patte. 

Fully transformed into a donkey, Pinocchio was sold to a circus. He was forced to perform tricks until he lamed his leg.

Devenu inutile, le maître du cirque le jeta à la mer. Dans l'eau, un banc de poissons rongea sa peau d'âne, le libérant. Il était de nouveau une marionnette ! 

Useless now, the circus master threw him into the sea. In the water, a school of fish nibbled away his donkey skin, freeing him. He was a puppet again!

Alors qu'il nageait vers le rivage, une énorme créature marine, le Terrible Requin-Baleine, surgit des profondeurs et l'avala tout rond ! 

As he swam for shore, a huge sea monster, the Terrible Dogfish, rose from the depths and swallowed him whole!

À l'intérieur du ventre sombre du monstre, Pinocchio vit une lumière. C'était Geppetto, qui avait été avalé des mois auparavant alors qu'il cherchait Pinocchio en mer !

Inside the monster's dark belly, Pinocchio saw a light. It was Geppetto, who had been swallowed months before while searching for Pinocchio at sea!

Ensemble, ils conçurent un plan. Quand le monstre dormit la bouche ouverte, ils sortirent en titubant sur le radeau de Geppetto. 

Together, they devised a plan. When the monster slept with its mouth open, they wobbled out on Geppetto's raft.

Un thon amical les aida à atteindre le rivage. Geppetto était faible, alors Pinocchio travailla dur chaque jour pour gagner de l'argent pour de la nourriture et des médicaments pour son père. 

A friendly tuna helped them reach the shore. Geppetto was weak, so Pinocchio worked hard every day, earning money for food and medicine for his father.

Une nuit, la Fée Bleue apparut à Pinocchio dans un rêve. « Tu as appris à être courageux, honnête et altruiste », dit-elle. « Tu as mérité ton souhait. » 

One night, the Blue Fairy appeared to Pinocchio in a dream. "You have learned to be brave, truthful, and selfless," she said. "You have earned your wish."

Quand Pinocchio se réveilla, il sentit quelque chose de différent. Il regarda ses mains. Elles n'étaient pas en bois, mais en chair et en os. Il était devenu un vrai garçon ! 

When Pinocchio woke up, he felt different. He looked at his hands. They were not wood, but flesh and bone. He had become a real boy!

Geppetto pleura de joie. Leur cabane délabrée s'était transformée en une jolie maison, et la poche de Geppetto était pleine de pièces d'or. Pinocchio, le vrai garçon, et son père vécurent heureux pour toujours. 

Geppetto cried with joy. Their rundown shack had transformed into a lovely cottage, and Geppetto's pocket was full of gold coins. Pinocchio, the real boy, and his father lived happily ever after.
