À la mort d'un meunier, ses trois fils héritèrent de ses biens. L'aîné eut le moulin, le cadet l'âne, et le plus jeune, Pierre, n'eut que le chat. « Que vais-je devenir ? » se lamenta Pierre. « Je n'ai qu'un simple chat. »

When a miller died, his three sons inherited his belongings. The eldest got the mill, the middle son got the donkey, and the youngest, Pierre, got only the cat. "What will become of me?" lamented Pierre. "I only have a simple cat."

À sa grande surprise, le chat lui répondit : « Ne t'inquiète pas, mon maître. Donne-moi juste un sac et une paire de bottes, et tu verras que ton sort n'est pas si mauvais qu'il y paraît. » Pierre était stupéfait. 

To his great surprise, the cat replied, "Do not worry, my master. Just give me a sack and a pair of boots, and you will see that your lot is not as bad as it seems." Pierre was astonished.

Intrigué, Pierre utilisa ses dernières pièces pour acheter une paire de petites bottes et un sac solide pour son chat. Il se demandait bien ce que l'animal avait en tête. 

Intrigued, Pierre used his last few coins to buy a pair of small boots and a sturdy sack for his cat. He wondered what on earth the animal had in mind.

Le chat enfila fièrement les bottes, jeta le sac sur son épaule et salua son maître d'un geste élégant. Le voilà transformé en Chat Botté, prêt pour l'aventure. 

The cat proudly put on the boots, slung the sack over its shoulder, and gave its master an elegant salute. He was now Puss in Boots, ready for adventure.

Le Chat Botté se rendit dans une garenne, mit du son et des herbes dans son sac, et fit le mort. Bientôt, un jeune lapin imprudent entra dans le sac pour se régaler. Le Chat Botté n'eut qu'à tirer les ficelles. 

Puss in Boots went to a warren, put some bran and herbs in his sack, and played dead. Soon, a foolish young rabbit entered the sack to feast. Puss in Boots simply had to pull the strings.

Il se rendit ensuite au palais et demanda à voir le roi. « Majesté, » dit-il en s'inclinant, « voici un lapin que mon noble maître, le Marquis de Carabas, m'a chargé de vous offrir. » 

He then went to the palace and asked to see the king. "Your Majesty," he said with a low bow, "here is a rabbit that my noble master, the Marquis of Carabas, has instructed me to offer you."

Le roi fut ravi. « Dis à ton maître que je le remercie. » Pendant plusieurs semaines, le Chat Botté continua d'apporter du gibier au roi, toujours de la part du mystérieux Marquis de Carabas. 

The king was delighted. "Tell your master that I thank him." For several weeks, Puss in Boots continued to bring game to the king, always from the mysterious Marquis of Carabas.

Un jour, le Chat Botté apprit que le roi et sa fille, la princesse Aurore, devaient se promener en carrosse le long de la rivière. Il courut aussitôt retrouver Pierre. 

One day, Puss in Boots learned that the king and his daughter, Princess Aurore, were going for a carriage ride along the river. He immediately ran to find Pierre.

« Fais ce que je te dis ! » ordonna le Chat Botté. « Va te baigner dans la rivière à l'endroit que je t'indiquerai. Pour le reste, laisse-moi faire. » Pierre, perplexe, obéit. 

"Do as I say!" ordered Puss in Boots. "Go and bathe in the river at the spot I will show you. As for the rest, leave it to me." Pierre, though puzzled, obeyed.

Alors que le carrosse royal approchait, le Chat Botté cacha les pauvres vêtements de Pierre et se mit à crier de toutes ses forces : « Au secours ! Au secours ! Voilà Monsieur le Marquis de Carabas qui se noie ! » 

As the royal carriage approached, Puss in Boots hid Pierre's poor clothes and began to shout with all his might: "Help! Help! The Marquis of Carabas is drowning!"

Le roi reconnut le chat qui lui apportait si souvent du gibier. Il ordonna aussitôt à ses gardes de porter secours au Marquis. 

The king recognized the cat who so often brought him game. He immediately ordered his guards to rescue the Marquis.

On sortit Pierre de l'eau. Comme ses vêtements avaient disparu, le roi lui offrit un de ses plus beaux habits. Vêtu de la sorte, Pierre, qui était déjà un beau garçon, avait l'air d'un véritable prince. 

Pierre was pulled from the water. As his clothes had disappeared, the king offered him one of his own finest suits. Dressed in this way, Pierre, who was already a handsome young man, looked like a true prince.

La princesse Aurore le trouva fort à son goût. Quand Pierre lui adressa quelques regards respectueux et tendres, elle en tomba amoureuse. 

Princess Aurore found him very much to her liking. When Pierre gave her a few respectful and tender glances, she fell in love with him.

Le roi invita Pierre à monter dans le carrosse. Pendant ce temps, le Chat Botté, ravi de voir que son plan commençait à réussir, prit les devants. 

The king invited Pierre to get into the carriage. Meanwhile, Puss in Boots, delighted to see his plan was beginning to succeed, ran on ahead.

Il rencontra des paysans qui fauchaient un pré. « Bonnes gens, » leur dit-il d'un air menaçant, « si vous ne dites pas que ce pré appartient au Marquis de Carabas, vous serez tous hachés menu comme chair à pâté ! » 

He met some peasants who were mowing a meadow. "Good people," he told them with a threatening air, "if you do not say that this meadow belongs to the Marquis of Carabas, you will all be chopped up as fine as mincemeat!"

Quand le roi passa, il demanda à qui appartenait ce beau pré. « C'est à Monsieur le Marquis de Carabas, » dirent les paysans, effrayés. « Vous avez là un bel héritage, » dit le roi à Pierre. 

When the king passed by, he asked who owned this beautiful meadow. "It belongs to the Marquis of Carabas," said the peasants, terrified. "You have a fine estate," said the king to Pierre.

Le Chat Botté, qui courait toujours devant, fit la même recommandation à des moissonneurs. Quand le roi s'informa, ils répondirent que les champs de blé appartenaient au Marquis de Carabas. 

Puss in Boots, still running ahead, made the same recommendation to some harvesters. When the king inquired, they replied that the wheat fields belonged to the Marquis of Carabas.

Toutes ces terres appartenaient en réalité à un ogre très riche qui vivait dans un grand château. Le Chat Botté y arriva et demanda à parler au maître des lieux. 

All these lands actually belonged to a very rich ogre who lived in a grand castle. Puss in Boots arrived there and asked to speak to the master of the house.

Il entra et flatta l'ogre, lui disant qu'il avait entendu parler de son incroyable pouvoir de se transformer en n'importe quelle créature. 

He entered and flattered the ogre, telling him he had heard of his incredible power to change into any creature he wished.

Piqué au vif, l'ogre se transforma aussitôt en un lion rugissant. Le Chat Botté fut si effrayé qu'il grimpa en haut des rideaux, non sans peine à cause de ses bottes. 

His pride pricked, the ogre immediately turned himself into a roaring lion. Puss in Boots was so frightened that he scrambled up the curtains, which was not easy because of his boots.

Quand l'ogre redevint lui-même, le Chat Botté descendit. « J'avoue que j'ai eu peur ! Mais je parie qu'il vous est impossible de vous changer en un animal tout petit, comme une souris. » 

When the ogre became himself again, Puss in Boots came down. "I admit I was scared! But I bet it's impossible for you to change into a very small animal, like a mouse."

Quand l'ogre redevint lui-même, le Chat Botté descendit. « J'avoue que j'ai eu peur ! Mais je parie qu'il vous est impossible de vous changer en un animal tout petit, comme une souris. » 

When the ogre became himself again, Puss in Boots came down. "I admit I was scared! But I bet it's impossible for you to change into a very small animal, like a mouse."

« Impossible ? » s'écria l'ogre. « Vous allez voir ! » Il se transforma en une petite souris, que le Chat Botté attrapa et mangea aussitôt.

"Impossible?" cried the ogre. "You shall see!" He turned into a little mouse, and Puss in Boots immediately caught and ate it.

Le roi, impressionné par les richesses et le beau château du Marquis, lui dit : « Il ne tient qu'à vous, Monsieur le Marquis, de devenir mon gendre. » Pierre, bien sûr, accepta. 

The king, impressed by the Marquis's riches and fine castle, said to him: "It only rests with you, Marquis, to become my son-in-law." Pierre, of course, accepted.

Le jour même, Pierre épousa la princesse. Le Chat Botté devint un grand seigneur et ne courut plus après les souris que pour s'amuser. 

That very day, Pierre married the princess. Puss in Boots became a great lord and never ran after mice again, except for amusement.
