Nous sommes en 1758. La Guerre de Sept Ans faisait rage en  Amérique du Nord, particulièrement dans les bois profonds et dangereux  autour du Lac Ontario. Les soldats se battaient, mais la vaste nature  sauvage exigeait des guides spéciaux.

The year is 1758. The French and Indian War raged across North America,  especially in the deep, dangerous woods around Lake Ontario. Soldiers  fought, but the vast wilderness required special guides. 

Mabel Dunham, une jeune femme anglaise, voyageait vers le nord  pour retrouver son père, le Sergent Dunham, en poste au Fort Oswego.  Elle était guidée par son oncle, le Capitaine Cap, expérimenté mais peu  habitué à la terre ferme.

Mabel Dunham, a young English woman, was journeying north to meet her  father, Sergeant Dunham, stationed at Fort Oswego. She was guided by her  experienced but land-averse uncle, Captain Cap. 

 « La terre est un casse-tête boueux ! » grommela le Capitaine  Cap. « Donnez-moi le large océan n'importe quand ! » Bientôt, ils furent  rejoints par un homme des bois, un éclaireur connu seulement sous le  nom de Le Flèche-Piste.

"The land is a muddy puzzle!" grumbled Captain Cap. "Give me the wide  ocean any day!" Soon, they were met by a man of the woods, a scout known  only as Pathfinder. 

Le Flèche-Piste était l'un des meilleurs yeux et oreilles du  Roi. Il connaissait chaque sentier, chaque bruit, et chaque signe de  l'ennemi. Sa loyauté envers la cause anglaise était absolue.

Pathfinder was one of the King's best eyes and ears. He knew every  trail, every sound, and every enemy sign. His loyalty to the English  cause was absolute. 

 Leur voyage vers le fort serait dangereux, les obligeant à  traverser un territoire tenu par les Français. Le Flèche-Piste avait  promis au Sergent Dunham de veiller sur Mabel.

Their journey to the fort would be dangerous, requiring them to cross  French-held territory. Pathfinder promised Sergeant Dunham he would keep  Mabel safe. 

En chemin, ils rencontrèrent un jeune homme tout aussi doué,  mais sur l'eau — Jasper, un courageux marin et batelier sur le Lac  Ontario.

Along the path, they encountered a young man who was equally skilled,  but on water—Jasper Western, a courageous sailor and boatman on Lake  Ontario. 

Cap, qui était un maître de la haute mer, avait du mal à  respecter l’habileté de Jasper à naviguer dans les hauts-fonds et les  courants délicats du Grand Lac.

Cap, who was a master of the open sea, struggled to respect Jasper’s  skill in navigating the tricky shoals and currents of the Great Lake. 

Pendant qu’ils voyageaient, Mabel était fascinée par les  différentes compétences nécessaires à la survie. Le Flèche-Piste lui  apprit à reconnaître un bon arbre pour s'abriter et le cri d'un oiseau  spécifique.

As they traveled, Mabel was fascinated by the different skills required  for survival. Pathfinder taught her how to recognize a good tree for  shelter and the call of a specific bird. 

Il expliqua que les bois fournissaient tout, à condition de  savoir comment le demander. Pour lui, la frontière était une carte  écrite par Dieu, claire pour ceux qui apprenaient sa langue.

He explained that the woods provided everything, if only one knew how to  ask it. For him, the frontier was a map written by God, clear for those  who learned its language. 

Finalement, ils atteignirent le Fort Oswego, une place forte  animée et rudimentaire sur la rive sud-est du Lac Ontario. Mabel était  ravie de revoir son père, le Sergent Dunham.

Finally, they reached Fort Oswego, a bustling, rough stronghold on the  southeastern shore of Lake Ontario. Mabel was overjoyed to see her  father, Sergeant Dunham. 

Le Sergent Dunham comptait énormément sur Le Flèche-Piste et sur  Jasper. L'un les guidait en toute sécurité à travers la terre hostile ;  l'autre contrôlait leur transport sur les voies navigables vitales.

Sergeant Dunham relied heavily on both Pathfinder and Jasper. One guided  them safely through the hostile land; the other controlled their  transport on the vital waterways. 

Il devint vite évident que l'homme des bois et le marin  éprouvaient une profonde admiration pour Mabel, et une douce rivalité  commença à s'installer entre eux.

It soon became clear that both the woodsman and the sailor held deep  admiration for Mabel, and a gentle rivalry began to grow between them. 

Le Sergent Dunham leur confia une mission secrète et cruciale :  naviguer sur une goélette pour livrer des provisions et des messages  vitaux à une position alliée éloignée de l'autre côté du lac.

Sergeant Dunham assigned them a crucial, secret mission: to sail a  schooner to deliver vital supplies and messages across the lake to a  distant allied position. 

Mabel, Cap, Le Flèche-Piste et Jasper montèrent tous à bord du  navire. Cap se sentit rassuré d'être de retour sur l'eau, bien qu'il se  plaigne de la petite taille de la goélette.

Mabel, Cap, Pathfinder, and Jasper all boarded the vessel. Cap felt  reassured to be back on water, though he complained about the tiny size  of the schooner. 

Jasper se révéla un excellent pilote, naviguant à travers des  criques brumeuses et des zones peu profondes que seul un vrai maître du  Lac Ontario pouvait gérer.

Jasper proved an excellent pilot, navigating through foggy coves and  shallow areas that only a true master of Lake Ontario could manage. 

Mais les Français patrouillaient activement le lac. Ils  réalisèrent bientôt qu'ils étaient suivis par une canonnière ennemie  rapide, et le danger était proche.

But the French were actively patrolling the lake. They soon realized  they were being trailed by a fast enemy gunboat, and danger was near. 

Soudain, le temps devint violent. Des nuages sombres  engloutirent le soleil, et le lac, d'habitude calme, devint un monstre  déchaîné et écumeux.

Suddenly, the weather turned violent. Dark clouds swallowed the sun,  and the lake, usually calm, became a raging, churning monster. 

Dans la tempête féroce, ce fut le courage de Jasper et sa  maîtrise de l'eau douce qui les sauvèrent de chavirer sur un récif  rocheux.

In the fierce storm, it was Jasper’s courage and mastery of the fresh  water that saved them from capsizing on a rocky reef. 

La tempête leur fournit également une couverture. Lorsqu'ils  émergèrent dans des eaux plus calmes, la canonnière française avait  disparu, forcée de battre en retraite face aux éléments.

The storm also provided cover. When they emerged into calmer waters, the  French gunboat was gone, forced to retreat from the elements. 

Ils livrèrent leur message avec succès. Maintenant, ils  faisaient face au périlleux voyage de retour à travers les bois jusqu'au  Fort Oswego, sachant que l'ennemi connaissait leur emplacement.

They delivered their message successfully. Now, they faced the perilous  return journey through the woods to Fort Oswego, knowing the enemy was  aware of their location. 

La formation du Flèche-Piste les sauva. Il détecta le moindre  signe d'embuscade — une feuille déplacée, une brindille cassée — juste  au moment où ils approchaient du fort.

Pathfinder’s training saved them. He detected the slightest sign of an  ambush—a disturbed leaf, a broken twig—just as they neared the fort. 

Une bataille éclata. Bien qu'ils se battissent courageusement,  le Sergent Dunham fut grièvement blessé en protégeant Mabel. Il donna sa  vie pour la mission et pour sa fille.

A battle erupted. Though they fought bravely, Sergeant Dunham was  gravely wounded protecting Mabel. He gave his life for the mission and  his daughter. 

Mabel pleura son père. Elle avait appris la différence entre la  terre, régie par l'honnêteté et l'habileté du Flèche-Piste, et l'eau,  maîtrisée par le courageux Jasper.

Mabel mourned her father. She had learned the difference between the  land, ruled by the honesty and skill of the Pathfinder, and the water,  mastered by the brave Jasper. 

Le Flèche-Piste, bien qu'il ait le cœur brisé, retourna dans les  vastes bois, à jamais le gardien de la frontière. Mabel et Jasper  trouvèrent un avenir ensemble, honorant les sacrifices faits pour le  jeune pays.

Pathfinder, though heartbroken, returned to the vast woods, forever the  guardian of the frontier. Mabel and Jasper found a future together,  honoring the sacrifices made for the young country.
