Il était une fois une princesse nommée Aurélia, dont la beauté n'avait d'égale que son amour pour sa balle en or. Chaque après-midi ensoleillé, elle se rendait au plus profond de la forêt, près d'un vieux puits, pour lancer et rattraper son précieux jouet.

Once upon a time, there was a princess named Aurelia, whose beauty was matched only by her love for her golden ball. Every sunny afternoon, she would go deep into the forest to an old well to throw and catch her precious toy.

Un jour, alors qu'elle lançait la balle plus haut que jamais, elle la manqua. La balle en or tomba, non pas sur l'herbe douce, mais directement dans l'eau sombre et profonde du puits. La princesse Aurélia se mit à pleurer à chaudes larmes.

One day, as she tossed the ball higher than ever, she fumbled the catch. The golden ball fell, not onto the soft grass, but straight down into the deep, dark water of the well. Princess Aurelia began to weep bitterly.

Soudain, une petite tête verte sortit de l'eau. "Pourquoi pleures-tu, Princesse ?" coassa une grenouille. "Je peux récupérer ta balle pour toi, mais que me donneras-tu en retour ?"

Suddenly, a little green head popped out of the water. "Why do you cry, Princess?" croaked a frog. "I can retrieve your ball for you, but what will you give me in return?"

"Je te donnerai tout ce que tu veux !" s'exclama-t-elle. La grenouille répondit : "Je ne veux pas de tes bijoux. Promets-moi que je serai ton ami, que je mangerai dans ton assiette et que je dormirai sur ton oreiller." La princesse accepta rapidement, pensant que la grenouille ne pourrait jamais quitter le puits.

"I will give you anything you want!" she exclaimed. The frog replied, "I do not want your jewels. Promise that I can be your friend, eat from your plate, and sleep on your pillow." The princess quickly agreed, thinking the frog could never leave the well.

La grenouille plongea et revint bientôt avec la balle en or. La princesse Aurélia la lui arracha des mains et courut vers le château, oubliant complètement sa promesse et la petite grenouille.

The frog dove down and soon returned with the golden ball. Princess Aurelia snatched it from him and ran back to the castle, completely forgetting her promise and the little frog.

Le lendemain soir, alors que la famille royale dînait, on frappa à la grande porte du château. La princesse Aurélia alla ouvrir et vit, à sa grande horreur, la petite grenouille assise sur le seuil. Elle claqua la porte au nez.

The next evening, as the royal family was at dinner, there came a knock at the grand castle door. Princess Aurelia went to open it and, to her horror, saw the little frog sitting on the doorstep. She slammed the door shut.

Le Roi, son père, remarqua son air effrayé. "Qu'y a-t-il, ma chère ?" demanda-t-il. Elle lui raconta toute l'histoire. Le Roi fronça les sourcils et dit : "Une promesse est une promesse. Tu dois la tenir."

The King, her father, noticed her frightened look. "What is it, my dear?" he asked. She told him the whole story. The King frowned and said, "A promise is a promise. You must keep your word."

À contrecœur, Aurélia laissa entrer la grenouille. Elle sauta sur la table et mangea dans sa propre assiette en or, tandis que la princesse la regardait avec dégoût.

Reluctantly, Aurelia let the frog in. It hopped up onto the table and ate from her own golden plate, while the princess watched in disgust.

Quand vint l'heure de se coucher, la grenouille insista : "Maintenant, porte-moi jusqu'à ta chambre pour que je puisse dormir sur ton oreiller de soie." Furieuse, la princesse la ramassa du bout des doigts, la peau froide et moite de la grenouille la faisant frissonner.

When it was bedtime, the frog insisted, "Now, carry me to your room so I may sleep on your silk pillow." Furious, the princess picked him up with the tips of her fingers, the frog's cold, clammy skin making her shiver.

Ne pouvant plus supporter cela, elle jeta la grenouille de toutes ses forces contre le mur de pierre ! Mais au lieu d'un bruit sourd, il y eut un éclair de lumière. Un beau prince se tenait là où la grenouille avait atterri.

Unable to bear it any longer, she threw the frog with all her might against the stone wall! But instead of a splat, there was a flash of light. A handsome prince stood where the frog had landed.

Le prince expliqua qu'une méchante sorcière lui avait jeté un sort, qui ne pouvait être rompu que par la promesse d'une princesse. "Votre promesse, même si elle a été rompue avec colère, m'a libéré", dit-il. Puis, il lui demanda de l'épouser.

The prince explained that a wicked witch had cast a spell on him, which could only be broken by a princess's promise. "Your promise, even though angrily broken, has set me free," he said. Then, he asked her to be his wife.

Le lendemain matin, un carrosse doré tiré par huit chevaux blancs arriva pour les emmener dans le royaume du prince. La princesse Aurélia, ayant appris une leçon précieuse sur l'honnêteté et la gentillesse, accepta joyeusement.

The next morning, a golden carriage drawn by eight white horses arrived to take them to the prince's kingdom. Princess Aurelia, having learned a valuable lesson about honesty and kindness, happily agreed.
