Il était une fois vingt-cinq soldats de plomb, tous frères, car ils étaient nés d'une même vieille cuillère en plomb. Ils étaient tous pareils, sauf un, qui n'avait qu'une seule jambe. 

Once there were twenty-five tin soldiers, all brothers, for they had all been born of one old tin spoon. They were all alike, except for one, who had only one leg.

Dans la salle de jeux se trouvait un château de papier. À la porte se tenait une petite danseuse, faite de papier aussi. Elle s'appelait Gracielle. 

In the playroom stood a paper castle. At the door stood a little dancer, also made of paper. Her name was Gracielle.

Constant la regarda. Elle aussi se tenait sur une jambe ! "Elle serait la femme parfaite pour moi," pensa-t-il. 

Constant looked at her. She too stood on one leg! "She would be the perfect wife for me," he thought.

Mais un gobelin méchant sortit de sa tabatière. "Soldat de plomb !" grinça-t-il. "Cesse de regarder ma danseuse !" 

But a wicked goblin popped out of his jack-in-the-box. "Tin soldier!" he creaked. "Stop looking at my dancer!"

Le lendemain matin, Constant tomba de la fenêtre. Était-ce le gobelin ou un courant d'air ? Personne ne le sut jamais.

Deux garçons le trouvèrent dans la rue. "Faisons-lui un bateau !" dirent-ils. Ils fabriquèrent un bateau en papier journal et y placèrent Constant. 

Two boys found him in the street. "Let's make him a boat!" they said. They made a boat out of a newspaper and placed Constant inside.

Le bateau dériva dans le caniveau. L'eau était rapide et sombre. "Où vais-je ?" pensa Constant, mais il resta stoïque. 

The boat drifted down the gutter. The water was fast and dark. "Where am I going?" thought Constant, but he remained steadfast.

Un rat d'égout surgit. "Ton passeport !" cria-t-il. Constant ne répondit pas. Le bateau fut emporté. 

A water rat appeared. "Your passport!" it squeaked. Constant did not answer. The boat was swept away.

Le bateau en papier se désagrégea et commença à couler. Constant ferma les yeux, pensant à sa douce Gracielle. 

The paper boat fell apart and began to sink. Constant closed his eyes, thinking of his sweet Gracielle.

Soudain, un gros poisson l'avala ! Il faisait tout noir à l'intérieur. C'était un voyage encore plus étrange. 

Suddenly, a big fish swallowed him! It was completely dark inside. This was an even stranger journey.

Le poisson fut pêché, emmené au marché, et vendu à une cuisinière. 

The fish was caught, taken to the market, and sold to a cook.

"Mon Dieu !" s'écria la cuisinière en coupant le poisson. "Voilà le soldat de plomb !" Elle le posa sur la table. 

"Good heavens!" cried the cook as she cut the fish open. "Here is the tin soldier!" She placed him on the table.

Quelle surprise ! Il était de retour dans la même salle de jeux. Il vit le château de papier et la charmante Gracielle. 

What a surprise! He was back in the very same playroom. He saw the paper castle and the lovely Gracielle.

Elle était toujours là, se tenant sur une jambe, toujours aussi gracieuse. Il la regarda et sentit des larmes de plomb couler.

She was still there, standing on one leg, as graceful as ever. He looked at her and felt tears of tin welling up.

Ils se regardèrent en silence. Ils se comprenaient sans avoir besoin de parler. 

They looked at each other in silence. They understood one another without needing to speak.

Soudain, un des petits garçons attrapa Constant et, sans raison, le jeta dans le feu de la cheminée. 

Suddenly, one of the little boys grabbed Constant and, for no reason at all, threw him into the fireplace.

Il sentit une chaleur terrible. Ses couleurs vives fondaient, mais il tenait toujours son fusil fermement. 

He felt a terrible heat. His bright colors were melting away, but he still held his rifle firmly.

Une porte s'ouvrit, un courant d'air attrapa la danseuse de papier. Elle vola comme un papillon, droit dans le feu, à côté de lui. 

A door opened, a draft of air caught the paper dancer. She flew like a butterfly, right into the fire, next to him.

Elle s'enflamma et disparut en un éclair. Le soldat fondit complètement, ne laissant qu'un petit cœur de plomb. 

She burst into flame and was gone in a flash. The soldier melted down completely, leaving only a small tin heart.

Le lendemain, en nettoyant les cendres, la servante trouva le petit cœur de plomb et la paillette de Gracielle, brûlée comme du charbon. C'est tout ce qui restait d'eux. 

The next day, when cleaning the ashes, the maid found the little tin heart and Gracielle's sequin, burnt as black as coal. That was all that was left of them.
