COD stands for “complément d’objet direct” in French grammar, which refers to the noun or pronoun that directly receives the action of the verb in a sentence. For example, in the sentence “Je mange une pomme” (I am eating an apple), “une pomme” (an apple) is the COD.

COI stands for “complément d’objet indirect” which refers to the noun or pronoun that indicates to whom or for whom the action of the verb is performed. For example, in the sentence “Je donne le livre à ma sœur” (I give the book to my sister), “ma sœur” (my sister) is the COI.

Exercise: Identify the COD and COI in the following sentence:

  1. “Il parle à ses amis sur le téléphone.” COD: amis COI: téléphone
  2. “Je vais acheter des fleurs pour ma mère.” COD: fleurs COI: ma mère
  3. “Le chien attrape le ballon.” COD: ballon COI: None
  4. “Je donne le cadeau à mon frère.” COD: cadeau COI: mon frère
  5. “Elle écrit une lettre à sa grand-mère.” COD: lettre COI: sa grand-mère
  6. “Nous faisons des cookies pour notre famille.” COD: cookies COI: notre famille
  7. “Je vais au cinéma avec mes amis.” COD: cinéma COI: mes amis
  8. “Il lit un livre intéressant.” COD: livre COI: None
  9. Je fais un gâteau pour mon anniversaire. (COD: gâteau, COI: mon anniversaire)
  10. Elle offre des cadeaux à ses enfants. (COD: cadeaux, COI: ses enfants)
  11. Nous planifions un voyage en Italie cet été. (COD: voyage, COI: Italie)

  • Remember that COD is the direct object and COI is the indirect object. If there is no indirect object in the sentence, COI is None.
